10 keys to unlocking school readiness

We’ve identified 10 key life skills that help children start school with confidence. These guide what most children typically can do by the time they begin Reception:

  1. I can settle happily without my parent or carer.
  2. I can tell friends and adults what I need.
  3. I can take turns and share when playing.
  4. I can use the toilet and wash my hands independently.
  5. I can put on my coat and shoes, and feed myself.
  6. I can tell a grown-up if I’m happy, sad, or upset.
  7. I understand my words and actions affect others.
  8. I’m curious and eager to learn and play.
  9. I can stop, listen, and follow simple instructions.
  10. I enjoy sharing books with adults
